The Danube & The Black Sea

The Danube, with its various names, flows through ten different countries and four capital cities before reaching the Black Sea. It’s a river that’s seen plenty of wars and has had a tumultuous history. This means that many of its wine regions aren’t that well known, despite centuries of grape growing. This episode follows the Danube from its starting point in Germany, through Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary, across Croatia and Serbia, and into Romania, Moldova, Bulgaria, and Ukraine where the Black Sea moderates the otherwise warm continental climate around the river. A rare chance to explore the wines of Central and Eastern Europe.

Lakes

Lakes directly affect the growing conditions of many wine regions in Austria, Hungary, Switzerland, Italy, the US, Canada, and New Zealand for instance. They often make ripening possible in otherwise cool climates and they have also played an important role in the formation of soil types and the aspect of the slopes surrounding them. And they’re usually important tourist destinations, which has also shaped the development of local wines. Listen to the podcast on patreon.com to learn more!
